Handwoven Jute & Straw Placemat

This eco-friendly placemat has been handwoven by rural artisans using natural jute and  straw grass or ‘Elephant Grass.’ A low-maintenance weed found in abundance in India, Elephant Grass derives its name from being a favorite food and hiding place for elephants. It grows up to 10 feet and hence lends itself beautifully to weaving. This weaving process however requires great practice and skill. The strands of grass are first tied in bunches and dun-dried for a few days before they can be used for weaving. Their robust, bamboo like properties make them durable and strong
