Longpi Earthenware Casserole

Displaying a subtle appearance on the outside and possessing richness of quality on the inside, this black casserole ensures a smooth collaboration between utility and elegance. This Longpi casserole is the paragon of a traditional craft in a contemporary form. Longpi is a tiny village in Manipur, a state in North-East India that is known for its black stone pottery. It has a rich black texture and is made by crushing serpentinite weathered rocks - a soft, dark greenish rock along with the earthy clay available in the Longpi village. It is fascinating how artisans make no use of a pottery wheel because the products are wholly shaped by hand with heaps of love! The powdered rock and clay are mixed together, forming a dough which is then flattened out on a wooden plate and manually molded. Often, wooden and bamboo poles are also used to shape objects. The offerings are eco-friendly, sustainable and highly durable! The products are polished, incised and carved by proficient artisans with the help of bamboo blades. Meticulous polishing is crucial to the process as it ensures the object does not crack during firing. It is fired in the kiln for 4-5 hours at about 900 degrees centigrade. Once removed, while still piping hot, they are covered with local leaves known as 'chilon-na'. The smoke of the leaves lends the signature charcoal black shade to the offering
